Shipping Container Kitchen: A Full Commercial Fit-Out for a Remote NT Site
Container Traders has fitted out a 20ft Shipping Container as a commercial kitchen for a remote station in the Northern Territory, with the capacity to serve 75 to 100 guests. The shipping container kitchen was completed at the depot and delivered ready to connect to site water and power.
What is inside the Shipping Container Kitchen
The layout makes full use of the 20ft Shipping Container. Prep and washing sits along one wall, with cold storage and the lockable pantry cage at the far end. A timber bench and seating area near the entry gives the crew somewhere to take a break without leaving the building. Most of the bench space is dedicated to food preparation with stainless steel surfaces throughout.
This is everything that went into the fit-out:
Keeping the kitchen comfortable to work in
The build carries a split-system air conditioner and full insulation across the walls and ceiling. A shipping container kitchen generates its own heat from cooking and equipment, and in the Territory the outside temperature adds to that. On the exterior, the air conditioning unit sits in a recessed housing so it does not take up bench space inside. An exhaust fan pulls cooking heat and fumes out of the kitchen rather than letting them build up. Non-slip vinyl flooring hoses down at the end of service, and insect-repelling lights fitted near the entry door keep bugs outside rather than in the prep area.
Connecting the Shipping Container Kitchen to site
From the outside, the shipping container sits plain and discrete with a personnel access door and additional lighting near the entry. The air conditioning outdoor unit sits in a recessed housing built into the end wall. On the services side, a water inlet connects to the kitchen’s plumbed sinks and drainage. Hook up a water source, connect power from a site outlet, generator or solar, and the kitchen is operational.
Some shipping container kitchen builds are designed for walk-up trade, with an awning or servery window cut into the side wall. Container Traders builds those as Hospitality Shipping Containers for cafés, bars and event kiosks. This build was heading to a working station, so the brief called for a practical kitchen, not a customer-facing one.
Why a Shipping Container Kitchen works for remote sites
A shipping container kitchen suits remote and temporary sites where building a fixed commercial kitchen is not practical.
