Scammers targeting the shipping container market are becoming increasingly sophisticated. In addition to using fake websites and social media profiles, they are now also leveraging paid search advertising, which can direct unsuspecting buyers to fraudulent websites.

To protect yourself from shipping container scams, keep the following in mind:

1. Be cautious with online marketplaces

Websites like Facebook and Gumtree are often targeted by scammers. Avoid making purchases solely through messaging apps like Messenger or WhatsApp.

2. Make phone contact

Always speak to a representative over the phone before making a purchase. Legitimate businesses will have a registered landline, usually a 1300 or 1800 number, rather than just a mobile number.

3. Check for online presence

Reputable container sellers will have an established online presence, including Google reviews, listings in business directories like the White Pages, and verified social media profiles.

4. Examine invoices carefully

Scammers often send invoices that look legitimate but lack key details like GST notations, ABNs, business names, and other identifying information you would expect on a valid invoice.

5. Ask for proof of legitimacy

Don’t hesitate to request business documentation, such as public liability insurance certificates. Legitimate businesses will be happy to provide these.

6. Verify business details

Contact other verified, reputable companies to confirm if the business you are dealing with is genuine.

7. Trust but verify

If you have any doubts, reach out to the company using publicly listed contact details to confirm the legitimacy of your quote or invoice.
