Whilst the majority of these reports are through marketplace platforms such as Facebook and classified websites like Gumtree, where the barrier for entry and the policing of such activity is non-existent, the organisations who conduct these scams are increasing in sophistication are now also using paid search advertising which click through to websites.
To avoid shipping container scams, bear the following in mind:
- Websites like Facebook and Gumtree are rife with scammers.
- Never conduct a purchase just through messenger, whatsapp etc.
- Always make phone contact. Legitimate operators will have a registered landline contact phone number. Usually this will be a 1300 or 1800 phone number, not solely a mobile number.
- Do an in-depth search on Google. Any reputable container seller with have a lot of reviews on Google, and will show in several websites such as white pages, locality directories etc.
- Scammers will often send invoices that look legitimate, but miss out on things such as GST notations, ABNs, Business names and general details you would expect on a valid invoice.
- Many scammers will have a limited online presence, be this social media or their website.
- Feel free to ask for business proof documentation such as public liability certificate. You should have no issue in getting a copy given to you.
- You can contact a verified reputable company, or a few, to see if the name of the company you’re unsure about is legitimate.
