A new shipping container house has made its way onto the Australian radar! Amy Plant & Richard Vaughan of Gippsland, Victoria, have built a beautiful home from 3 shipping containers joined by floating links on a 5-acre block of land – matching perfectly to their lifestyle and values.
Originally, they both decided while travelling to Europe that they wanted to minimise their belongings and home in the view that it would give them more freedom and help them to continue their current lifestyle of traveling. The couple both wanted a low maintenance type of home, to be able to stay traveling and have a lower debt level, however were still very keen to become home owners – and found shipping containers to be the perfect solution!
Luckily both Amy & Richard work in the building industry, and the concept for the home was created by Richard and his mother in law – the couple worked on the property after hours and on weekends, finishing it in only 5 months – for around $145,000. The house features a European style laundry and a wardrobe in the floating links, solar panels and windows that encourage cross ventilation so artificial heating and cooling aren’t required. And because of this, they have a 7.1 star energy rating – so very low power bills!
